Too late to say goodbye – A poem about regret

Echoes of lonely silence
Excuses rebound in my head
Words I should have said to you
Yet all remain unsaid

Our trivial talk was wasted
My one lifelong regret
Feelings I had kept inside
An empty silhouette

Was always busy living
To spend time that was true
I’d turn back the hands of time
Give anything for you

We only know what’s missing
When it’s gone for good
Selfish nights of endless work
I never understood

All I have are photos
Clutched in trembling hand
I raise a whiskey to the sky
I try to understand

The pain will never leave me
Regret etched in my heart
For time is now eternal
We are forever apart
